Infant Distress andDevelopment of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Childhood: Is There a Connection? Oneinfant in4manifestswithabundantcrying, fussing,orcolic cry and is brought for medical evaluation during the first months of life.1 Concomitantly, excessive antigen uptake and bacterial translocationensueacross the immaturegutbarrier.2 Not surprisingly, infant cryinghasbeen related to foodallergy3 and aberrant gutmicrobiota composition4 and these have, in turn, been linked to functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs).5Wehypothesized that colic crying is associatedwith FGIDs later in childhood.
